Protesters march on Chicago police station after fatal officer-involved shooting

- A man was fatally shot Friday night in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

Chicago Police Chief Fred Waller said a group of officers patrolling the city's South Shore neighborhood at about 5:30 p.m. saw a person they believed to be armed and confronted him.

They chased him, and after a short distance he turned and shot toward the officers, said Sgt. Al Stinites, a police spokesman who responded to the scene.

Later in the evening, when protesters marched towards the police station on Cottage Grove Ave., tensions between demonstrators and police escalated.

The city erupted in protest in 2015 after the release of a video showing white police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting black 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014. Waller said protesters threw bottles and jumped on top of a squad auto. Police said an officer then returned fire and neither the officer nor Truitt were injured. "After that, they approached the subject, who became combative and as he became combative, flailing away, he broke free from the officers and they thought he appeared to be reaching for a weapon - which he did have a weapon on him - and officers tragically shot this man".

He was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital, a Chicago Fire spokesman said.

Chief Waller said protesters threw bottles and jumped on top of a squad vehicle, with social media videos showing punches thrown on both sides.

Chicago's Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting to see whether use of deadly force was justified, according to Fox 32 Chicago. "Several arrests were made", Waller said.

The protest continued until about 11 p.m. local time Saturday, police said in a tweet announcing that they had cleared the shooting scene.

Four protesters were arrested Saturday, while three or four officers sustained minor injuries during the protests, according to officials. McDonald's death led to the ouster of the police chief and a series of reforms created to prevent future police abuses and to hold officers accountable for excesses.
