West Nile concerns arrive with summer

Additional mosquitoes in CT have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Don't forget about the risk of West Nile Virus.

The virus was detected in a pool of mosquitoes collected June 18 in Easton.

What Is West Nile Virus?

Mosquitoes are most active at sunrise and sunset.

The Health Unit reminds people that they should continue to protect themselves against mosquitoes and it's important to eliminate any standing water and take personal protective measures to avoid mosquito bites. Since 2004, 232 residents have been infected with the virus, 8 of which have lost their lives.

Employees regularly count mosquitoes caught in traps located in half a dozen areas in Huron, including Winter Park, Ravine Lake Park, Kunhart Field, Sportsman's Club, the new Southtown water tower in southeast Huron and the state Game, Fish & Parks Department on the state fairgrounds.

Some people who contract West Nile develop neurological syndrome, which can be deadly.

Doors - Make sure doors and windows are in good repair and fit tightly, and fix torn or damaged screens to keep mosquitoes out of the house.

Serious cases of West Nile virus are rare, but can cause swelling of the brain, loss of vision, paralysis and even brain damage.

Individuals should take note of the location and condition of the bird before calling for further instructions. The public is also encouraged to report any suspected mosquito-breeding sites and/or any mosquito activity.
