Netflix has just become the top Emmy-nominated network

The streaming service's maneuvering (and not incidentally, expensive Emmy campaigning) paid off with 112 nominations - a significant increase over past year, edging HBO's 108.

HBO awards darling Veep was ineligible this year and its crown passed to Atlanta, the FX comedy created by and starring Donald Glover, which amassed 16 nods.

"Games of Thrones", a worldwide hit, got 22 nods, including for the top prize of best drama series.

CNN's "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown", received a nomination in the category for best information series or special, which also includes shows with Leah Remini and David Letterman. Rae was nominated Thursday for an Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series.

Serena doesn't want daughter to follow in her footsteps
Drake made some Serena Williams fans a little nervous on Tuesday by showing up to her quarterfinal match at Wimbledon . Williams is playing in her 11th semifinal at the tournament.

Meanwhile, 2018 freshman series nominees on the comedy side are HBO's "Barry", Netflix's "GLOW", and Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel". That's double the total of nods it earned in 2016 and just ahead of HBO's 108 nods (down two from 2017). Only one nominations category is all-white, and in three categories minority actors account for more than half the nominees. "Master of None" star Aziz Ansari, who is of Indian heritage, was the sole Asian-American to be nominated for a continuing series lead or supporting role. In three Emmy categories, minority actors account for more than half the nominees: Supporting actor in a limited series or movie, guest actor in a comedy series and guest actress in a drama series. It was followed by NBC's sketch show "Saturday Night Live" and HBO's sci-fi series "Westworld" with 21 nominations each, and Hulu's dystopian vision "The Handmaid's Tale" with 20.

"I feel tremendous gratitude and joy with this nomination" and am "thrilled" for the show's cast and crew, Oh said in a statement.

The 2018 Emmy Awards will air Monday, September 17 on NBC at 8 p.m. ET from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

But the scandal appeared not to have tainted much-admired Tony victor and Oscar nominee Laurie Metcalf, Roseanne's sister Jackie in the show, who picked up her eighth nomination.
