He only grew the nails on his left hand, keeping his right hand trimmed.

Chillal started growing his nails when he was just 14, after being scolded for breaking a teacher's nail.

They were only fingernails, but to Shridhar Chillal, cutting them off probably felt a bit like cutting off his own hand. The nails have a combined measurement of 909.6 centimetres, with his thumbnail as the longest single nail at 197.8 centimetres.

Chillal had requested that his cut nails be immortalised in a museum and the Ripley's Believe It or Not museum in Times Square responded positively.

After growing his fingernails for 66 YEARS, the man with the world's longest fingernails has finally had them cut - and they've gone on display in NY! "If I had made a decision to cut my nails, I would not have a Guinness World Records title now".

"When I chose to cut my nails, it was hard for me to make this decision", he said.

When asked by Guinness World Records in 2015 how his nails affect his life, Shridhar said they were extremely fragile and he needed to take care when sleeping. "Now, forever my nails will be remembered and forever my nails will be seen by people from all over the world".

"Chillal dedicated his life to something truly remarkable and Ripley's is the ideal home to honor his legacy", a rep says, per the Hindu. "I can't move much, so every half an hour or so I wake up and move my hand to the other side of the bed", he told Guinness World Records.

The weight of his nails has left him permanently handicapped and in constant pain - he can not open his hand or move his fingers. "Times Square", Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Well, Shridhar. I hope you absolutely make the most of the rest of your life, no longer inhibited by your horrific nail situation. They together stretched about 30 feet, or the length of a bus, before he finally had them cut on Wednesday. The museum will host a "nail clipping ceremony" today where Chillal's nails will be cut.
