12 injured in fuel tank explosions near Cairo global airport

Images on Twitter show a large plume of smoke rising from an area of Cairo International Airport.

The explosion, which happened around 10:30 pm local time, occurred at two fuel storage tanks outside the airport, Egypt's Civil Aviation Minister said, according to Reuters.

Egyptian state television is reporting that a fire raging as a result of the explosion had been brought under control. However, some local residents say that flight operations have not been halted, and air-traffic-tracking website FlightRadar24 reports that Cairo's airport is still operating.

The nighttime explosion at the warehouse roughly three kilometres from the airport could be heard across Cairo, shaking windows and setting off auto alarms.

A number of social media users initially expressed fear that the explosion was casued by an attack. Later that year, ISIS claimed responsibility for a deadly airport bombing in Brussels.
