Trump lashes out at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies calling for increase in defence spending

"I have to say, I think it's very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia where we're supposed to be guarding against Russia, " Trump said, referring to the planned Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

Trump's remarks on Germany and Russian Federation generated a sharply worded response from German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Merkel, who grew up in East Germany, later shot back, "I have experienced myself how a part of Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union".

It might also be a rare accomplishment for two nations at odds over charges Moscow interfered in the 2016 USA election, Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and support for separatists in eastern Ukraine, which have triggered US sanctions, and their involvement on opposite sides of the Syrian civil war.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation chief Jens Stoltenberg said Tuesday that seven out of 27 European members were on course to spend two percent of GDP on defense in 2018: Britain, Greece, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Lithuania and Romania. So I think the secretary-general likes Trump.

"This year, since our last meeting, commitments have been made for over $40 billion more money spent by other countries". "Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of them all", Trump said Tuesday before departing for Brussels.

"They will spend more", he later predicted. "Given those facts, I confidently join this summit".

Stoltenberg said he expected a "open and frank" debate about defence spending at the summit but tried to play down the differences opening up between allies.

Now, nurse sharks are largely pretty docile, but it's always worth remembering that they are still sharks. Her boyfriend's father snapped photos capturing the moment a nurse shark clamped down on her left arm.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Mr Trump's press secretary, said: "He suggested that countries not only meet their commitment of 2..." Trump and Putin are set to meet on July 16 in Finland.

And he said: "Dear America, appreciate your allies - after all you don't have that many".

Trump is due to meet Putin on Monday in Helsinki. "I think these countries have to step it up, not over a 10-year period, but immediately". Germans wouldn't agree with that.

Typically, when people are "involved in a persuasive effort together", those in nonspeaking roles will gaze at the person who is talking, occasionally nod to reinforce what they are saying and then look at those on the opposite side of the table to convey a sense of unity, Civiello said.

Merkel said she was "very pleased, indeed, to have this opportunity here for this exchange of views". Asked if they had discussed the pipeline, he said they had, but declined to elaborate.

The president and his fellow critics argue that if America does less, others will do more - that its largess facilitates free riders. That was in stark contrast to Trump's subsequent meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. He later returned to ripping Germany, explaining the country is "captive to Russian Federation". "Why are there only 5 out of 29 countries that have met their commitment?"

"We're supposed to protect you against Russian Federation", he told Stoltenberg, "but they're paying billions of dollars to Russian Federation and I think that's very inappropriate".

US President Donald Trump informally proposed members spend 4% of GDP up from 2%.
