How Jacob Rees-Mogg plans to push Theresa May around

Looking at the condemnation from Jacob Rees-Mogg and his ERG colleagues, coupled with the resignations of cabinet Brexiteers Boris Johnson and David Davis, it might therefore be tempting to assume that the Brexit proposal presented by Theresa May at Chequers would hold some good news for Remain voters - or at least for advocates of soft Brexit.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom Robert "Woody" Johnson IV said President Trump put America's global relations and Europe's own security "in perspective" with his tough talk at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

"It delivers on the vote that people gave on Brexit, it delivers the fact that we will have an end to free movement, we will have an end to the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice in the United Kingdom, we won't be sending vast contributions to the EU every year, we'll be out of the Common Agricultural Policy, out of the Common Fisheries Policy", she said. I think they agree with me on immigration.

Mr Rees-Mogg, who chairs the European Research Group of Eurosceptic Tories, said of the amendments: "Unfortunately Chequers was a breakdown in trust".

"The people voted to break it up, so I imagine that's what they'll do", Trump told a news conference at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels.

Boris Johnson and David Davis have jumped ship. "The people voted to break it up so I would imagine that's what they would do, but maybe they're taking a different route - I don't know if that is what they voted for".

Trump suggested that his upcoming meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin could be easier than his trip to Europe to see North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders and Mrs May. "Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of all".

The PM needs only a simple majority to survive and following any failed bid to oust her, will be safe from another leadership challenge for 12 months.

Ambassador Johnson sought to play down Trump's comments.

Brussels has warned that Theresa May's Brexit proposals must be workable in order to avoid a no deal scenario as the Government reveals details of its controversial European Union withdrawal plans.

The US president's brash style and hardline "America First" policies have caused consternation across Britain's political spectrum and society.

Mr Trump's son Eric has arrived in Scotland for a golfing visit to Trump International Golf Links at Menie, Aberdeenshire, and Trump Turnberry, near Girvan, South Ayrshire.

The Survation poll of 1,007 people found 38 percent felt the Brexit proposals agreed by the cabinet at May's country retreat of Chequers last week were a sell-out while 35 percent felt them to be the best deal Britain was likely to get.

A minister quoted the prime minister as saying, "If we don't pull together, we risk the election of Jeremy Corbyn as prime minister", The Guardian reported.

Later, Trump will go to Windsor Castle for tea with 92-year-old Queen Elizabeth.

He then travels north to Scotland where he and his wife Melania will spend the weekend privately.
