It is unclear when Torreira will report for pre-season with Arsenal as until recently he was in action at the World Cup.

Arsenal have acquired a "very bright talent" in their latest signing Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira said the Premier League side's manager Unai Emery on Tuesday.

The deal was finalised after Torreira flew in to London following Uruguay's exit at the World Cup in Russian Federation, having helped his country reach the quarterfinals.

The signing is also another step toward shoring up a defensive unit that struggled badly last season under Arsene Wenger, with Arsenal having already signed veteran right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus, Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Torreira will sign a five-year contract at the Emirates.

He added that all four boys from the first rescued group could now eat normal foods, though nothing spicy. Each of the rescued boys has been guided through the dark winding cave by two pairs of divers.

The Arsenal new signing has been given the shirt no.11 which was previously worn by Mesut Ozil in the past but Lucas Torreira will now be wearing it next season as he plays his first season in the English competition.

Tenfield says Torreira will earn £50,000 a week at Arsenal with his move potentially being confirmed today.

The Gunners thrashed out an agreement with the Italian Serie A side to seal the signature of the Uruguay global and he has arrived to bolster Unai Emery's options in midfield.

The 5ft 6in holding midfielder flew to London earlier in the week to undergo a medical, and his acquisition will be seen as a huge boost to the club following the recent departure of Jack Wilshere to West Ham.
