Billy Dee Williams Set To Return To ‘Star Wars’ As Lando Calrissian

Williams hasn't played Lando on film since 1983′s "Return of the Jedi", and the character hadn't appeared in 2015′s "Episode VII" or 2017′s "Episode VIII".

While there are many Lando Calrissian stories that are now non-canon (a.k.a. have the designation "Star Wars Legends"), the character has been a key part of the universe for years.

The man who originated the charismatic character almost four decades ago is reportedly headed back to that far away galaxy for Star Wars: Episode IX, the upcoming installment in the blockbuster franchise.

The nominee must be confirmed by the US Senate, which the Republican president's party narrowly controls 51-49. The decision has far-reaching implications for America on everything from abortion to guns to immigration.

Williams will be joining fellow new cast addition Keri Russell (M:I-3, The Americans), as well as Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac and John Boyega for J.J. Abrams' new sequel closer.

He's also lent his iconic voice to the character in numerous animated film and TV projects, as well as several Star Wars video games. Following Colin Trevorrow's exit over creative differences, Abrams - who directed The Force Awakens - was asked to return to direct Episode IX.

The past month or so has seen a number of rumours that he'd return, after he started getting back into shape and cancelled a convention appearance due to scheduling conflicts, and now they've proved to be true. Star Wars: Episode 9 is set to begin production this summer. Previously set for a May 24, 2019 release date, the film will now arrive on December 20, 2019.
