North Korea says talks with Pompeo were 'regrettable'

The U.S. "came up only with its unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization, just calling for CVID, declaration and verification, all of which run counter to the spirit of the Singapore summit and talks", KCNA quoted a spokesman at the North's Foreign Ministry as saying.

Speculation has been rife that the USA might have eased its demand for the North because it recently started calling for "the final, fully verified denuclearization (FFVD)" of North Korea, instead of CVID, a key phrase jointly used by the United States, South Korea and Japan. "People are going to make certain comments after meetings".

After talks with the foreign ministers of Japan and South Korea on Sunday, the secretary of state said his efforts to press the North on nuclear weapons were legitimate.

America's top diplomat was speaking in Tokyo, where he had met with the foreign ministers of Japan and South Korea as well as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to discuss the progress made during his trip to North Korea.

'The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know critics will try to minimize what we have achieved, ' he said.

"The North Koreans have certainly made their stance clear - denuclearisation is part of a much bigger overall package that includes peace and its security concerns", said Zhang Baohui, director of the Centre for Asian Pacific Studies at Lingnan University in Hong Kong.

Mr Pompeo also sought to dispel suggestions the Trump administration had backed down from demanding the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of the North's nuclear weapons.

On the destruction of the missile engine plant, Pompeo said, "We talked about what the modalities would look like for the destruction of that facility as well, and some progress there as well, and then we have laid out a path for further negotiation at the working level so the two teams can get together and continue these discussions".

"Sanctions will remain in place until final fully verified denuclearization as agreed to by Chairman Kim Jong-un has occurred", he said.

After the historic U.S.

There was no immediate explanation of what needed to be clarified, but the two sides have been struggling to specify what exactly "denuclearisation" would entail and how it could be verified to the satisfaction of the United States. And, the promised remains have yet to be delivered.

While President Donald Trump's point man for nuclear talks summed up his 27 hours in the North Korean capital as "productive", the regime called the visit "regretful".

"Sanctions will remain in place until final, fully verified denuclearisation as agreed to by Chairman Kim (Jong Un) occurs", Pompeo said, adding that the U.S. would seek to smooth the path by providing security guarantees requested by Pyongyang.

Bruce Klingner, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst and North Korea expert at the Heritage Foundation, said the statement showed that to North Korea, denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula means "global arms control in which it will abandon its arsenal when all other nuclear powers, including the United States, abandon theirs". "But this expectation and hope of ours was so naive as to be gullible", the statement said.

It downplayed the significance of the United States suspending its military exercises with South Korea, something trumpeted by Trump after the summit as a success, by saying it made a larger concession by blowing up the tunnels at a nuclear test site.

However, he emphasized that the North still has trust in the US President, apparently hinting that Pyongyang wanted to keep the ongoing denuclearization talks on track.

He said before leaving for Pyongyang he was seeking to "fill in" details on North Korea's commitments and maintain the momentum towards implementing the Singapore agreement between Trump and Kim. Pompeo spoke with Trump, Bolton and White House chief of staff John Kelly on Saturday before his second round of meetings with Kim Yong Chol.
