Lewis Hamilton edges Kimi Raikkonen in FP3 as Brendon Hartley crashes heavily

Hamilton, victor for the past four years at Silverstone and five times in total, topped the timesheets with a lap of one minute 26.722 seconds.

The scary incident brought out a red flag to halt the third practice session at the British Grand Prix Hartley.

The Toro Rosso driver crashed heavily at Brooklands after front left suspension failure pitched him into a spin.

Hartley was speeding down the Wellington Straight, reportedly at 200 miles per hour when a failure in front-left suspension and steering caused the crash.

When the session restarted with 30 minutes on the clock, only five drivers had set a lap time.

Four boys have so far completed the hazardous escape, according to rescue officials, and are receiving medical treatment. The entire mission may last three to four days, as the boys are expected to come out gradually, officials said .

Aside from Leclerc, only Haas pair Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean were able to get within two seconds of the time achieved by pacesetter Hamilton, as they classified eighth and ninth respectively.

A few minutes later, he climbed out of the vehicle and walked away with a medical official. Gasly did not return to the track after Hartley's crash.

Hamilton, though, responded by clocking a time of 1:26.722 - the quickest of the weekend - winding up 0.093s faster than Raikkonen, as he goes in search of a fourth straight pole position at the venue.

"I was already three or four tenths of a second quicker than yesterday but then, a couple of corners later it was all over - I hit the brake pedal and all of a sudden the front suspension broke".

The Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the top six, but only after an unexpected challenge from the Sauber of star rookie Charles Leclerc.
