New Suzuki Jimny may not get a diesel

The 2018 Suzuki Jimny Sierra employs the new K15B 1.5L petrol engine.

While it has a ladder-frame chassic, Suzuki says it has worked on the new Jimny's on-road handling with a new steering damper on the front suspension, created to minimise steering wheel vibration.

Suzuki has just confirmed the 2019 Suzuki Jimny will go on sale in Australia during the first quarter of next year.

Replacing the 1.3-liter that we've found underpowered in our test drive of the previous generation, the 1.5-liter in the all-new Jimny delivers "ample torque at low revolutions". The model, as reported earlier, will be sold with a 660cc petrol motor for the Japanese domestic market. Suzuki hasn't revealed acceleration figures, but has said that the Jimny will reach a top speed of 90mph when fitted with the standard five-speed manual gearbox - or 87mph with the optional four-speed automatic. A ladder frame structure, three-link axle suspension and part-time four-wheel-drive from the "AllGrip Pro" system will make it a force to contend with on the muddy stuff. The new Jimny sticks with low range gear selector for its 4WD system to the former system to maximise its off-road adjustability. Ground clearance comes in at 210mm.

It's also now expected to arrive in the United Kingdom in 2019, earlier than previously thought. Much of the design appears similar to that applied to the latest Mercedes-Benz G-class, such as the squared-off wheel arches and tail-lights located low on the bumper. The new model rides 20mm higher on 15-inch alloy wheels, but the overall length has reduced slightly to 3,480mm.

The likes of Maguire, a paying punter like the rest only two years ago, are changing that dynamic. Then we needed to score, (we) scored first, controlled the game", David Thomson said.

On the inside, the Jimny gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a dual pod instrument cluster with a central MID, dashboard mounted power window switches and climate control.

Suzuki says the interior has been designed with function and form with all controls usable while wearing gloves.

Safety kit has also been improved, with autonomous emergency braking, six airbags, lane departure warning and high beam assist a massive upgrade over the current vehicle.

Two folding rear seats allow for up to 377 litres of luggage space, which is 53 litres more than in the old Jimny.
