Fires Across California Force Evacuations, Claim Homes And At Least One Life

Governor of California Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Siskiyou County, citing "extreme peril" to people and property.

"Prevention is key; search and rescue crews may be prohibited from engaging in search missions due to fire danger", JCSO said in a statement. A fire also broke out further north in the city of Goleta in Santa Barbara County later Friday night.

At last report the fire had burned 8,000 acres and was just 5 percent contained.

Trained staff and volunteers reportedly helped to evacuate numerous center's animals Friday night and the rest of the animals and some supplies were being taken out the following morning.

Authorities said one person was killed in the fire.

Roadway closures in the area of the fire were implemented to keep people out of the way of firefighters, and the California Highway Patrol said Saturday that "all roads northbound from La Patera Lane to Patterson Avenue along Cathedral Oaks Road are closed to the public".

No other details were released about the death blamed on the fire that threatened 300 homes near Hornbook, a town of 250 people about 14 miles (22 kilometers) south of the OR border.

By Saturday morning, the fire was said to only be 5 percent contained although the flames had died down significantly.

"We know we've lost homes and lots of structures, including livestock and horses as well", said Ray Haupt, chairman of the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors.

Firefighters on Friday were battling blazes in Alpine, Dulzura and Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base in San Diego County, California, where the National Weather Service had issued an excessive heat warning until 9 p.m. Officials expect increasingly warm temperatures and dry weather this weekend could spur fire growth.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said Friday that although the blaze has not crossed into OR, officials are concerned people in remote areas could be unreachable in case they need to quickly evacuate.
