England beats Sweden 2-0 to advance to semi-final in Russia

England fans turned out in their droves at fan zones across the land and they were rather pleased after goals from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli secured a 2-0 win against Sweden in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Goals in each half from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli clinched victory for Gareth Southgate's men in their first quarter-final in the competition since 2006, while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced a hat-trick of stunning saves to maintain his clean sheet.

Gareth Southgate's side will now face Russian Federation or Croatia in Moscow on Wednesday night. In 1990, Bobby Robson's team came within a penalty shootout of reaching the World Cup final, only to lose to West Germany in the semifinal in Turin.

"England were the best team today".

Taking a break from the relentless singing of England's Going All The Way to the chorus of Earth, Wind & Fire's September, a delighted 35-year-old technician Sean Bruntley told The Sunday Times: "We may not be the most spectacular team, but the lads really work hard for each other".

Sweden are ranked 24th - two places below England's Euro 2016 nemesis Iceland - in the Federation Internationale de Football Association world rankings, while Russia or Croatia would await if Southgate's men were to make it to the semifinals. "We looked like we controlled the game".

Ibrahimovic made a bet with David Beckham before the game. Sharing a throwback picture of the pair, he wrote: "Yo @davidbeckhamif @england wins I buy you dinner where ever you want in the world, but if @swemntwins you buy me whatever I want from @ikeasverige ok?"

This map from the National Hurricane Center shows the latest forecast track of Hurricane Beryl as of 11 a.m. on Friday, July 6. The development of this feature is possible as the storm moves through a low shear environment and warm ocean waters.

England was nearly made to pay straight after the interval and would have been pegged back if Pickford had not produced a top-drawer save to keep out a Berg header. Let us know in the comments section below!

"I don't think anything went wrong".

All we need is for Beckham to get Ibrahimovic to say: 'It's coming home!'

Most England fans were very, very grateful for modern technology. "I can't speak highly enough of the whole squad", he said.

Croatia were agonisingly close to scoring on the hour when Russia's defence failed to clear the ball and Ivan Perisic's shot hit the inside of the post but rebounded harmlessly across the face of the goal.

A rowdy group of England fans went a little over-the-top in England following the Three Lions' World Cup quarterfinal defeat of Sweden, trashing a local IKEA outlet to celebrate the occasion.

This is by no means the best England team to reach this stage of a World Cup since 1966.
