Tyler Honeycutt dies following gunfire exchange with police

Tyler Honeycutt, a former UCLA and National Basketball Association player most recently playing for Khimki in Russian Federation, was found dead in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles following a shootout with police officers, per ABC 7.

Tyler Honeycutt once had a bright future as a budding star at UCLA, but it never really translated into the National Basketball Association. When officers arrived, the man opened fire at the officers, who returned fire.

His team confirmed his death on Twitter after speaking with his agent.

The man, said to be in his mid-20s, shot at the officers after his mother called the authorities and said her son was "acting erratically", Los Angeles' KABC-TV reported, citing authorities.

Honeycutt, a standout high school star in California, most recently played for Russia's Khimki in the 2017-18 season.

While no officers were hurt, at least one of them discharged a weapon, according to the Police Department. A lieutenant with the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office declined comment to Yahoo Sports on Saturday morning and said he could not yet release the name of the deceased.

After playing out his sophomore year at UCLA as a First-team All-Pac-10, Honeycutt declared for the 2011 NBA Draft, where he was picked 35th overall by the Kings. He was 27 years old.

The Kings traded Honeycutt to the Houston Rockets in 2013.
