Trump delaying NAFTA deal until after midterm elections

"We talked about border security, trade, NAFTA, we talked about a separate deal, just Mexico and the United States", Trump says about conversation with newly elected Mexican president Lopez Obrador. The winning candidate said he will make that proposal in a meeting Tuesday with current President Enrique Pena Nieto. I think the relationship will be a very good one.

"It's our chance to go and celebrate Independence Day with the Americans and demonstrate we're friends", said Bezan. Trump told Fox News in an exclusive interview.

In responses to the Trump administration's tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada and other countries, Canada has slapped a tax of 10 percent on more than 80 American products, including coffee beans, strawberry jam, maple syrup, and toffee.

A government official familiar with the plan says now that Mexico's presidential election is done, Ottawa wants to restart talks as soon as possible, even though Trump says he won't sign a new deal until after us voters go to the polls in November.

He added that he would wait until after the fall elections.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland has said she spoke with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer six times last week and that she expects NAFTA talks to move into a higher gear this summer.

He said he hoped the Americans would resume NAFTA talks because Canada is ready to get back to the table. "The president is working to fix the broken system, and he's going to continue pushing for that".

A fresh round of talks on the three-country pact will come with Canada and the US locked in an unprecedented, cross-border trade fight.

Trudeau has insisted the US president's complaints about Canada's trade barriers are the result of Canada's refusal to give in to Trump's demands to do away with the country's supply-management system, which is created to protect dairy, poultry and egg producers.
