Nawaz Sharif sentenced to 10 years in jail

The accountability court, in a momentous decision on Friday, sentenced deposed prime mininster Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison.

The president of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), and former chief minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif held a press conference on Friday soon after the Avenfield corruption reference verdict was announced by accountability judge Muhammad Bashir. "There was even talk of holding hearings on weekends", Shahbaz said while adding that Nawaz also "appeared before the accountability court 109 times".

The Sharifs had filed an application on Thursday requesting the court to delay the verdict in the Avenfield reference and grant a seven-day exemption in the wake of Nawaz's wife, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz's deteriorating health.

Nawaz Sharif and Maryam are now in London visiting Kulsoom Nawaz, who is suffering from cancer and is undergoing treatment there. "The PML-N and the people of Pakistan reject the court's verdict", he said. He is reinstated by the supreme court but then resigns under pressure and his party loses elections to the Pakistan People's Party of Benazir Bhutto, daughter of Zulfiqar Bhutto. It is a major setback for Nawaz Sharif's party which is contesting the election on all parliamentary seats.

Khan, a former cricket captain of Pakistan, has portrayed the legal cases as a long-overdue corruption crackdown on the PML-N, which he has labelled a graft-ridden "mafia".
