"We at RT America are sad to announce the passing of Edward Andrew Schultz", the channel said. A statement from RT later clarified he passed away at his home in Washington, D.C. This has been corrected.

Schultz was a standout quarterback at Minnesota State University-Moorhead in the 1970s. But he was a fiery liberal by the time he took his show into national syndication in 2004. He then joined RT America, where he hosted a half-hour broadcast called "The News With Ed Schultz". At one point, The Ed Schultz Show was syndicated to almost 100 affiliates, and in 2008 he was ranked No. 17 nationally by Talkers magazine, reaching a weekly audience of more than 3 million listeners.

Schultz is survived by his wife, Wendy, and six children.
