Sunday shows preview: Supreme Court fight in the spotlight

With little more than a week before President Donald Trump announces his nominee to the highest court in the land, Trump sought to downplay some of his past comments about making opposition to legalized abortion a litmus test for his Supreme Court nominees. Choosing his successor, which needs Senate approval, gives Trump the chance to mold the dominant ideology on the Supreme Court for years to come.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on Friday he hoped the confirmation process would be done "in time for the new justice to begin the fall term of the Supreme Court ... the first Monday in October".

"In cases like Planned Parenthood v. Casey, he did not address the most critical issues and allowed for a swamp of mismatched abortion laws that permit the abortion industry to continue to operate in ways that harm women as well as preborn children", Ms. Hawkins said in a statement.

Speaking earlier in the day in Wisconsin, Trump said: "We're going to pick ourselves one great United States Supreme Court justice to take the place of a great man".

By picking a social conservative to replace Kennedy, Trump would have a reliable 5-4 majority on the Supreme Court, even on some of those hot-button social issues. The current record for longest service on the Supreme Court is held by William O. Douglas, who served for 36 years from 1939 to 1975.

Trump says he thinks that is "inappropriate to discuss".

He is set to meet with candidates over the weekend in New Jersey. "That will begin immediately", Trump said at the White House.

LeBron joins Lakers in $154 million deal
In 11 seasons with the franchise, he averaged 27.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game. LeBron James wasn't the only free agent to join the Los Angeles Lakers this weekend.

Two women are also reportedly on Trump's shortlist, including Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who is considered another frontrunner for Kennedy's seat. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he asked Kennedy whether he had any possible candidates in mind.

"It's gonna be epic", said Marjorie Dannenfelser of the Susan B. Anthony List, which works to elect candidates who oppose abortion rights. "I'm convinced the people on this list are Gorsuch-like", said Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life.

In the run-up to selecting Gorsuch, Trump met with three contenders and White House officials vetted several more.

When a mobile communications officer did call back and put Mr. Trump on the line, Mr. Melendez played the part of the senator, although his voice sounded nothing like Mr. Menendez's.

It's a big question now with the pending resignation of Justice Anthony Kennedy, who has provided the "swing vote" supporting Roe v. Wade in legal challenges.

This comes after the president revealed the date to reporters on Air Force One Friday, and also noted he is considering five people for the pending vacancy, which includes two female judges.
