4 dead after shooting at Capital Gazette newspaper office building in Annapolis

A Twitter account matching Ramos name with a location of Laurel, Maryland, includes years of tweets railing against Capital Gazette and includes details of a yearslong legal dispute with the company.

One suspect is in custody, a white male in his 20s who didn't have identification on him, sources told CBS News.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all that are affected", Walters said.

Five people have been shot dead and several more injured by a gunman at the offices of Capital Gazette, a newspaper in the Maryland capital of Annapolis.

The Baltimore Sun, which owns the Annapolis newspaper, says a reporter told them of the shooting. Tronc recently sold the Los Angeles Times, San Diego Union-Tribune and other California newspapers in a $500 million deal.

"There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you're under your desk and then hear the gunman reload", Davis wrote in another tweet.

Police have confirmed an active shooter in the building housing a Maryland newspaper.

Anne Arundel County Acting Police Chief William Krampf confirmed the deaths Thursday at a news conference.

Phil Davis, a crime reporter at the Capital who was in the newsroom during the shooting, recounted the shooting in a series of harrowing tweets after he was out of the building and deemed safe.

"But as much as I'm going to try to articulate how traumatising it is to be hiding under your desk, you don't know until you're there and you feel helpless".

"I can tell you this: We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow", reporter Chase Cook wrote on Twitter.

Police arrived and surrounded the shooter, Davis said.

First responders had recently run through an active-shooter training, he said.

Danielle Ohl, a news reporter at the paper who tweeted she was on vacation at the time of the shooting, said that one of her colleagues "is in the hospital with an injury". Ramos unsuccessfully sued the Capital Gazette for defamation in 2012, and has since used social media to attack the ruling and the newspaper. "The shooter has not been very forthcoming, so we don't have any information yet on motive", Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh said. We do our best to share the stories of people, those who make our community better.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it was responding to reports of the shooting. Scores of police vehicles were on the scene.

Governor Larry Hogan said the police response was incredible and possibly saved lives.

A police spokesman in New York City said security had been bolstered at New York-based news organizations as a precaution.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen wrote on Twitter, "My heart is with the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims as we learn more about this awful situation".
