Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of the South Bronx handily defeated 10-term incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley of Queens in New York's 14th District.

Congressman Joe Crowley was seen as a potential future speaker of the House of Representatives.

Jealous faces a tough general election in November against incumbent Republican governor Larry Hogan.

Holtzman says she's excited to see what the 28-year-old can do. "I can not believe these numbers right now, but I do know that every single person here has worked their butt off to change the future of the Bronx and Queens".

Mrs. Pelosi, meanwhile, was put on the defensive, slapping down the idea that the NY race is a reminder of how the base has turned against the Democratic leadership.

Ocasio-Cortez is not the only young up-and-comer shaking up the Democratic party in New York City and across the country. It depends on who you're talking to.

District 14 covers parts of the Bronx and Queens, where census numbers show the population is almost half Hispanic - very different from when Crowley first took office 20 years ago, CBS2's Andrea Grymes reported. "When the challenges we are confronted with are this big, this deep, and growing, I can't and I won't wait my turn".

Ocasio-Cortez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Asked why she thought her message resonated with voters, Ocasio-Cortez said, "I think a lot of working-class Americans and voters here have been waiting for an unapologetic champion for economic, social and racial dignity in the United States".

They do, however, generally believe the government should help provide for people's most basic needs and help all people have an equal chance at achieving success.

"They have no accountability to enforcing civil rights, which is why they violate all of those things flagrantly".
