National HIV Testing Day in Austin

Several clinics and pharmacy chains nationwide are offering free testing all day long on Wednesday.

The theme for National HIV Testing Day, Doing It My Way, Testing for HIV, underscores that there are many reasons to be tested for HIV and many ways to get the test.

An estimated 1.1 million individuals in the United States are living with HIV, including 162,500 who are unaware of their status, according to the CDC.

The issue stemming from stigma is that people are scared due to the blame and shame society places on those infected with HIV, said Keegan.

The White House didn't respond to a request for comment on LGBT omission from the National HIV Testing Day statement. She said the recommendations should reflect the importance of making HIV testing a more regular clinical practice and that alerts prompting clinicians to test for HIV should be part of a hospital's electronic health record system, the same way hepatitis C is now handled.

HIV Edmonton, nurses from Streetworks (an outreach group that provides harm reduction and medical care), the Edmonton Men's Health Collective, and the Edmonton STI Clinic all helped make the event happen.

David Howard, with the New Hanover County Health Department, said testing is so important because of the make-up of the disease. He says people at high risk of contracting the virus should be tested once a year.

"The biggest change is that we have lot more tools as far as living with HIV and preventing HIV", he said. Light refreshments will also be served from 5-8 p.m. and those who take a HIV test will be registered for a $100 gift card. It's important to know whether or not you have it.

"Despite this progress, in 2016, almost 40,000 people were diagnosed with HIV in the United States", Trump said. When this annual observance started in 1985, there were fewer resources to treat a positive HIV diagnosis.

Chamberlin said the agency hopes to know in the near future if funding will be made available to offer the testing in 2019.
