Fox News said his death was expected, but heartbreaking.

A Harvard-educated psychiatrist, Krauthammer went on to become a widely influential political commentator and best-selling author.

On June 8, Krauthammer wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post titled "A note to readers", in which he revealed that he only had weeks to live.

Last year, Krauthammer had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his abdomen, and it led to complications that have kept him hospitalized. This is the final verdict. "My fight is over", he wrote.

Krauthammer is survived by his wife Robyn and their son Daniel, as well as his mother. "I am sad to leave, but I leave with the knowledge that I lived the life I intended".
