Ridiculed Ronaldo bust replaced with new model at Madeira airport

If you'll recall back in March 2017, the worldwide airport located in Ronaldo's native Madeira Islands officially changed its name to Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo.

The sculpture of the Portugal and Real Madrid forward gained worldwide attention when it was installed previous year at the airport, which is also known as Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport.

The bronze bust of the Real Madrid and Portugal forward went viral with people questioning its resemblance to the player, after it was placed on display at Madeira airport past year.

Emmanuel Santos, the sculptor behind the original bust unveiled in 2017, told Bleacher Report he is "feeling very sad" about the replacement.

Now, because sports Twitter has quite the sense of humour, there's an online petition making the rounds to bring back the original.

It took over a year, but the airport is finally the home of a statue that actually looks like Ronaldo.

Over 500 people have signed an online petition to bring back the old statue because it caused such an global stir when it was first unveiled. According to Madeira Island News the statue was replaced on the request of Ronaldo's family. The switch took place on the same day as Portugal's 3-3 draw with Spain in their World Cup opening fixture - a game that saw Ronaldo score a hat-trick.

The "Aeroporto da Madeira" was renamed after Cristiano Ronaldo.
