Haley blasts rights groups for undermining US

Ambassador Nikki Haley did not mince words while making the announcement with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo late Tuesday afternoon.

"The Human Rights Council has become an exercise in shameless hypocrisy - with numerous world's worst human rights abuses going ignored, and some of the world's most serious offenders sitting on the council itself", Pompeo said.

"Our US counterparts have shown boorish cynicism - they are reluctant to admit that they have human rights issues themselves but at the same time, they continue attempts to reshape the council to make it serve their needs, stressing that there was no place for persistent violators of human rights in the council", Zakharova pointed out.

The decision comes days after the United Nations criticized the Trump Administration for separating migrant children from their parents at the U.S./Mexico border in Texas.

Earlier, deputy permanent representative Yu Jianhua of China - which has sporadically faced USA criticism over its human rights record - said his delegation was "disappointed" about the US pullout.

And the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank close to the Trump administration, defended the move, calling the council "notably incurious about the human rights situations in some of the world's most oppressive countries". The U.S. announced its withdrawal from the council on Wednesday, citing among other things its alleged anti-Israel bias. Russian Federation strongly rebuffed USA criticism of its air strikes in Syria on Tuesday, reminding Washington how it had supported the United States in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks on NY in 2001.

The human rights office, or OHCHR, is a permanent United Nations organization that ultimately falls under Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The previous agreement was an all-stock deal, and Comcast's cash offer was seen as a significant enticement. Last week, a judge signed off on AT&T's purchase of Time Warner, the parent company of CNN.

Haley has been the driving force behind withdrawing from the human rights body, unprecedented in the 12-year history of the council.

President Trump speaks at the White House on Monday.

Bolton said the decision to withdraw was made by Trump "weeks ago" and followed a long review of the Human Rights Council's performance.

Slovenian ambassador Vojislav Suc, who now holds the council's rotating presidency and has been pushing a faltering reform drive, described the Geneva-based chamber as the best place to trigger action on unsafe rights crises.

Israel is the only country recorded as a dedicated agenda item. The tariffs were quickly matched by China on US exports.

That means the council will be left without one of its traditional defenders of human rights.

Russia's United Nations mission responded in a statement that the USA had tried but failed to turn the Council into an "obedient instrument for advancing their interests and punishing the countries it dislikes". At the rights council, the United States has recently been the most unabashed critic of rights abuses in China - whose growing economic and diplomatic clout has chastened some other would-be critics, rights advocates say.
