Migrants Killed in Possible Human Smuggling Rollover Crash

At least five people were killed and several others hurt Sunday as an SUV carrying more than a dozen people crashed while fleeing from Border Patrol agents in South Texas.

Footage of the scene showed a charred Chevrolet SUV and several law enforcement vehicles.

The crash was reported when Border Patrol agents attempted to stop an SUV in Dimmit County, reports said. The driver was taken into custody.

Boyd said his officers have dealt with the driver before, adding he was scouting the area earlier to try and pick up immigrants.

Some of the injured passengers were flown by medical helicopters to hospitals in San Antonio, and others were taken by ambulances to a hospital in Dimmit County.

The fatal crash occurred around noon local time near Big Wells, which is about 100 miles southwest of San Antonio, Dimmet County Sheriff Marion Boyd told reporters at the scene.

Boyd said the driver and one passenger of the passengers were the only US citizens in the vehicle.

The sheriff said he didn't know where the immigrants were from but said most migrants who travel through the area are from Central America or Mexico.

The sheriff said he didn't know where the immigrants were from. "He was able to get him out of the vehicle and the driver was actually walking", Boyd said.

He added: "This is a ideal example of why our borders need to be secure".

CNN reports they reached out to Yolanda Choates, a spokeswoman for US Customs and Border Protection, but she directed all comments back to the sheriff's department.
