The summit is seen by North Korea as a way of bringing legitimacy to a nation long regarded as a pariah. In that period, Pyongyang tested six nuclear devices and an even greater number of long-range missile designs, some of them capable of delivering warheads to targets as far away as Washington.

"We understand that the United States will advance the discussion on provision of security guarantees while carefully monitoring whether North Korea takes concrete steps to fulfill its commitment to denuclearization". "But we may never get to the endpoint".

"This is a major win for (North Korea), which of course wants to weaken the US-South Korea alliance and eventually send the US troops home", Dr Roy said.
