Trump Will Leave Summit With North Korea Early

He told reporters that the discussions are "moving quite rapidly and we anticipate they will come to their logical conclusion even more quickly than we had anticipated".

For all the upbeat talk, it remained to be seen what, if any, concrete results the sit-down would produce.

US and North Korean officials huddled throughout Monday at the Ritz-Carlton hotel ahead of the sit-down aimed at resolving a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal.

The North has presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to the country's neighbours and the USA as a logical next step and completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent in response to what Pyongyang says is a policy of "nuclear blackmail" by Washington.

It will be "easy", said Trump, but the reality was anything but. "We overcame all that and we are here now". "Kim must not see American weakness".

The North Korean leader "has a personal toilet that follows him around when he travels", said Lee Yun-keol, who worked in a North Korean Guard Command unit before coming to South Korea in 2005. Kim has been accused of horrific rights abuses against his people.

U.S. President Donald Trump and top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un will meet at the Capella Hotel on Singapore's Sentosa Island on Tuesday. While aboard Air Force One, the president also tweeted out a plug for South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster ahead of the state's Tuesday primary. But he added "our hostages" are back home and testing, research and launches have stopped. The profit Trump earns from foreign officials who visit his various hotels and golf resorts don't amount to a bribe, argued DOJ lawyers, because there was no "corrupt intent" and because it's hard to prove that Trump's foreign policy decisions are influenced by his business holdings.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meanwhile told reporters he was "very optimistic" about the summit, and insisted the U.S. was willing to offer Pyongyang "unique" security guarantees if Kim's government signed up for complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation, or "CVID".

Earlier today, Trump met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana house.

Mr. Trump has described the summit as a "one-time shot" at peace and told reporters during the G7 summit in Canada that he would "know within a minute" if the summit would be successful. The White House says that this change of plans is a product of talks moving more quickly than expected.

Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan (Bal-a-krish-nan) says Kim went to the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore on Monday night. "Kim and Trump both seem to want the same thing: a dramatic reversal in the U.S". But North Korea's nuclear ambitions are the outcome, not the cause, of confrontation on the Korean Peninsula.

Earlier, officials from the two sides held last-minute talks aimed at laying the groundwork for the summit between Trump and Kim, a meeting nearly unthinkable just months ago when the two were exchanging insults and threats that raised fears of war. Or, it could amount to little more than a much-photographed handshake. After greeting each other - an image sure to be devoured around the world - the two leaders planned to sit for a one-on-one meeting that a US official said could last up to two hours, with only translators joining them.

Trump had been scheduled to fly back to Washington on Wednesday morning after spending Tuesday with Kim.

Trump advisers cast his actions as a show of strength before the Kim meeting.
