Sony isn't budging on Fortnite cross-platform play

But, "Fortnite" fans who tried using accounts created via PS4 quickly discovered those accounts won't work on Switch.

PS4 gamers hoping to parachute into Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch have probably noticed that their account progress doesn't carry over.

Not being able to play with PS4 owners is a bit of a bummer.

Whether this means that loot boxes or a similar mechanic will find their way into upcoming Switch titles is something we'll see, but Nintendo isn't certainly isn't averse to the idea. Whichever way you slice it, Sony's stance on this is, rightly or wrongly, landing it in hot water, and the above statement will nearly certainly add fuel to the fire rather than extinguish it. There could be any number of reasons why: Sony could be anxious that PS4 owners will jump ship if they can play with their friends on other consoles. "We're always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience", Sony added in the statement.

"With. more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we've built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles".

In E3 interviews, representatives for Sony's fellow console makers were relatively diplomatic in expressing their annoyance. "And that's a decision that each of them are making, and some are supporting cross-play and some are not".

On the other side, Microsoft Head of Xbox Phil Spencer told Giant Bomb that locking players away from each other "doesn't feel like it helps the consumers". While it would absolutely prefer that folks talk about how much they're looking forward to those games, the general public is instead talking about one thing and one thing only: Fortnite. Sure, at least some of the fragments can be put together, but true "play anywhere" capability still doesn't exist.
