Pompeo also cautioned that the USA would resume "war games" with close ally South Korea if the North stops negotiating in good faith.

Trump described his meeting with Kim as "an interesting and very positive experience" and said North Korea "has great potential for the future".

"Trump and Kim have committed to denuclearisation of the entire Korean Peninsula".

But the details of what is sure to be a complex and contentious process have yet to be settled.

"'You know, we're spending a fortune, every couple of months we're doing war games with South Korea, and I said, 'What's this costing?"

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", Trump tweeted early Wednesday.

The North's official KCNA news agency described the summit as an "epoch-making meeting" that would help foster "a radical switchover in the most hostile (North Korea)-US relations".

But some argue North Korea didn't go any further than previous promises.

Pyongyang also confirmed Trump's declaration on Tuesday that the U.S. would halt joint military drills with South Korea. He said negotiations would recommence "in the next week or so".

"We also hope that the resolution of the Korean Peninsula issue will take into account and address our concerns about proliferation linkages extending to India's neighbourhood", it added.

Independent experts say the North could have enough fissile material for between about a dozen and 60 nuclear bombs. Conservative House Republicans were unrepentant in their praise for the president for engaging with North Korea, a sharp reversal from many of their views on similar negotiations between President Barack Obama's Secretary of State John Kerry and Iran.

They fear it could erode the readiness of US troops in one of the world's most sensitive military flashpoints who have long prided themselves on being able to "fight tonight", thanks to heightened training.

Lieu dismissed the idea of holding the drills in Japan or Guam since the terrain would not properly simulate a conflict with North Korea.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un listens to U.S. President Donald Trump as they meet in a one-on-one bilateral session at the start of their summit at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa, Singapore, June 12, 2018.

"We had pretty much finished, and I said, 'Would you do me a favor?" Trump cast the decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue.

Kim said he wanted to express his gratitude to President Trump for making the meeting happen.

The president added he'd love for the exercises to stop because they are expensive.

"He was unambiguous about that", Pompeo said.

The paper also reported that Mr. Kim and Mr. Trump "gladly accepted each other's invitation" to visit Pyongyang and Washington, respectively, in follow-up meetings from the denuclearization summit.

To which Trump said: "Yeah, but so have a lot of other people done some really bad things".
