Nadal beats Thiem for 11th French Open title

Nadal beats Thiem for 11th French Open title

"It's not even a dream to win here 11 times, because its impossible to think of something like this". Nadal's uncle and longtime former traveling coach Toni - who returned to watch his nephew Sunday - said essentially that only time will tell whether Federer can be caught.

The semifinals of the French Open was a different scenario.

The Spaniard had been the hot favourite to win the second Slam of the year, after warming up with three clay-court titles in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome.

But Nadal himself wasn't too bothered.

"He managed to do it well".

When asked if he will defend the title next year, he said: "It was incredible to win for the 10th time, same thing for the 11th". He is also assured of keeping his number one ranking for good measure.

- Nadal breaks in the second game as Thiem nets a forehand. "I happy that other people have things, and I am very satisfied, and I feel very lucky with all the things that happened to me". That was part of a five-game run that sent Nadal on his way.

Nadal's form never wavered, though, and soon enough he was celebrating his 17th Grand Slam title overall, second among men only to Roger Federer's 20.

Unlike previous year - when those first few games realistically settled matters - Thiem bounced back, breaking straight away. So there was mild concern when Nadal called for the trainer for treatment.

By then, Nadal was finding his spots. Nadal is 49-2 since 2017 when playing on clay.

He broke the Austrian in the third game of the set. Frustrated ThiemNadal, however, turned the screw in the 10th game and Thiem seemed to grow nervous, sending a forehand long to hand his opponent the opening set.

Nadal won the first set 6-4. "Bravo. To me it's been still great two weeks".

That shock exit prompted speculation that Nadal was finished as a heavyweight of the sport.

Thiem is contesting his first Grand Slam final.

US, Mexico, Canada embark on World Cup history with winning bid
Although it would be the first tournament to be hosted by three nations, the vast majority of games will be held in the US. The joint bid defeated Morocco's application with 134 of the 200 votes cast at the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday.

He still occasionally inconvenienced the reigning champion, not least when a deft drop shot brought up a point to break back at 2-4. Thiem stayed with Nadal in the early going on a steamy afternoon. The French Open statisticians are nicer than they should be, as all but one of Thiem's 19 errors in that stretch were unforced (officially, 12 were unforced and seven were forced).

Rafael Nadal has taken the first set of his French Open final against Dominic Thiem.

At 4-4 Nadal hit a second serve that bounced before it reached the net but he shrugged that off to hold.

Maybe nerves were a factor in Thiem's performance.

Spain and Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has led the social media acclaim for tennis star Rafael Nadal, after he won a record-extending 11th title at the French Open in Paris. Another forehand victor from Nadal found a corner, and Thiem yelled toward his coach. Thiem withstood a barrage of break points to hold in a marathon sixth game, which he thought he had won at 40-30 when he left a wide ball, only for the umpire to overrule the line judge.

No chance for Dominic Thiem, literally demolished by Rafa's omnipotence.

The 83-year-old was presented to the crowd at the beginning of the trophy presentation, with a highlights package played on the big screen.

Krejcikova and Siniakova, who are both 22, were playing in their fifth major tournament together.

Once he moved two sets ahead it merely became a race against time for Nadal to finish the match off before the rain arrived.

They knocked out the top-seeded pair of Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic in the quarterfinals.

He beat the Swiss master, Roger Federer, when he was just 17 years old.

Regained the title the following year, beating Soderling in the final. Federer, who skipped the clay-court season, plans to play Wimbledon next month to chase No. 21.

The women's doubles final is also Sunday.
