Jacksonville could see 2026 impact from World Cup vote

In the most positive news in American soccer in years, the United 2026 bid prevailed and the World Cup will be returning to the United States for this first time since 1994.

Mexico last held the event in 1986, while the USA held the World Cup in 1994.

Nashville was included in the 23 cities involved in the bid, meaning a World Cup game could be played in Music City.

Years of meticulous planning and preparation have all led to this moment and now, on the eve of the first ball being kicked at Russian Federation 2018, Peter Schmeichel pays a visit to Moscow to sample the pre-World Cup flavor. Players who are now 12-18 are now presented with the massive opportunity of representing their country on the biggest stage in the world, and, thanks to a much more reserved announcement several weeks back, they now have several more pathways to work toward doing just that.

Peter Montopoli, the general secretary of the Canadian Soccer Association and Canada's bid director, said it will be 100 per cent natural grass, meaning temporary surfaces will have to be installed in stadiums with artificial turf.

Gianluigi Buffon, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, is also one of the tournament's legendary No. 1s, as is Spain's Iker Casillas, who lifted the trophy in South Africa in 2010. That was the only World Cup that Canada's men's team has ever qualified for. The United States is likely to have 10 cities selected to host games, while Mexico and Canada are expected to each have three. "That is something over the next eight years that we'll look at from a (Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment) standpoint, an Exhibition Place standpoint".

The joint North American bid was considered a heavy favorite from the outset and earned high marks from FIFA's bid evaluators because it will, in theory, require less construction and lower costs than the Moroccan bid, which carried an estimated price tag above $15 billion.

Here's what you need to know and what we're still waiting to find out. Even if Trump wins re-election, his presidency would end before the 2026 World Cup. "If we could put the question of the province's support behind us, then we can make sure that we check all the other boxes and make it to the final 16".
