But it's interesting that McGregor signed onto a major studio film mere weeks after the box office disappointment of another Star Wars Story prequel, nearly like he suddenly had an opening in his schedule.

Film industry bible Variety reported the news on Wednesday, adding that sources say King has given his blessing to McGregor's casting.

The novel picks up years after the traumatic events at the Overlook Hotel, as Danny grapples with the same alcohol and anger issues his father experienced. His worsened drinking problem equally suppresses his pain and his previously titular "shining" ability.

Horror writer King, pictured last month, published The Shining in 1977 and its sequel Doctor Sleep in 2013. The filmmaker previously tried his hand at King's material with Gerald's Game, the critically acclaimed take on the King novel that was once considered unadaptable. But when he embraces sobriety, his psychic powers return and he uses his abilities to help dying patients in a hospice where he earns the nickname Dr. Sleep. The actor next stars in Disney's "Christopher Robin", which opens August 3. There Dan meets Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan's own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra's soul and survival.
