Woman drove with 2 children in pet kennels, arrested

According to police, the children were spotted Saturday afternoon in the 3700 block of Elvis Presley Blvd. near Graceland.

The children, aged 7 and 8, were in the backseat of the vehicle by the time the police found the woman, Leimome Cheeks, 62, the documents show.

Memphis police arrested 62-year-old Leimome Cheeks on two counts of child endangerment after a bystander recorded the children climbing out of the kennels on Saturday.

In the clip, one of the children can be seen walking out from the cage once the Mrs Cheeks released her the back of the truck.

The children at the center of the case are not in the custody of the Department of Children's Services, but DCS is investigating the family.

Cheeks said that she checked on the children periodically and they were later let into the back of the vehicle.

Mrs Cheeks neighbours' expressed their horror at the incident, with residents calling the grandmother a woman of strong faith.

One neighbor told Local 24 it was "very sad because it feels like hell right here now, it's very hot".

Temperatures in the area reached about 35 degrees Celsius.The mum is now facing charges of child endangerment. A neighbor identified as Eugene Richmond stated to the media, "I think she needs some help. If she did that, then that's out of character for her".

Cheeks remained the the Shelby County Jail and is scheduled to see a judge Monday, Fox 13 reported.
