Trump's Freeze of Korea Joint Exercises Catches Allies by Surprise

Trump's Freeze of Korea Joint Exercises Catches Allies by Surprise

"I support (the joint statement) as the first step toward a comprehensive resolution of issues involving North Korea", Abe said at the prime minister's office in Tokyo.

Kim was quoted as saying that if the USA takes "genuine measures for building trust", then the North can reciprocate in a "commensurate" fashion - suggesting that the US will have to make concessions before North Korea. But the vaguely worded document did not clearly address the North's current nuclear arsenal, estimated to be as many as 60 bombs, or its numerous shorter- and longer-range missiles, including weapons believed capable of striking much of the continental United States.

Last week Russian Federation invited the North Korean dictator to visit the country and it is believed Kim may do so during an economic forum in September.

"Through this US-North Korea summit, Chairman Kim Jong Un's intent for complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula was confirmed in writing", Abe told reporters.

Trump also drew criticism for announcing he was ending joint "war games" with South Korea, embracing the frequent North Korean criticism that the exercises are "very provocative".

Stephanopoulos snared the first TV-news interview between President Trump and an outlet other than Fox News since NBC News' Lester Holt sat down with the President in May of previous year.

At the heart of negotiations was the "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization" of the Korean peninsula in exchange for "security guarantees" for the North's mercurial leader, Kim Jong Un. "The lethal envelope of advanced air-defense systems continues to grow against our 4th Generation aircraft", General Mark Welsh, the former chief of staff for the U.S. Air Force, said in a statement. "No longer - sleep well tonight!"

Trump on Tuesday pledged to suspend the US and South Korea's "war games", or military drills.

The two rivals bids each got 15 minutes to make one last pitch Wednesday, with the North American bid going first. The 2018 tournament kicks off in Russian Federation on Thursday and the 2022 World Cup is to take place in Qatar.

The IL-62 was one of three aircraft that flew to Singapore from North Korea's capital Pyongyang on Sunday.

Current and former U.S. officials say they're concerned at the possibility that the USA might stop military drills unilaterally, without an explicit pledge from Pyongyang to lower its threat.

Pompeo is expected to meet South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono while he is in Seoul. Bush took a tougher stance toward North Korea, and the 1994 nuclear deal collapsed because of suspicions that the North was running a secret uranium program.

The president's suspension of the exercises came as U.S. Forces-Korea, led by Army Gen. Vincent Brooks, is preparing for the annual Ulchi-Freedom Guardian exercises later this summer with the South Koreans. Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government on the talks.

Mr Trump insisted that strong verification of denuclearisation would be included in a final agreement, saying it was a detail his team would begin sorting out with the North Koreans next week.
