Bruce Heyman, who was USA ambassador to Canada during President Barack Obama's administration, called on Navarro in a tweet to formally apologize to Trudeau for his "insulting and inappropriate remarks".

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, who is heading for Washington Wednesday, said the Liberal government "would keep calm and carry on throughout those moments of drama".

"We have states that depend on Canada as their largest export market - over 30 states in fact".

Trump and Aides throw insults at Trudeau - It is hard to conceive how a leader of one of the largest countries in the world, President Donald J. Trump of the U.S. could throw insults of the type which are alike to a child having a temper tantrum - at one of his country's closest allies, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

His response comes after the Trump administration's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

The president said he was annoyed by Trudeau's comments about not letting Canada get pushed around.

And he confirmed that Canada would press ahead with dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on July 1 as previously announced.

Reaction to the Trump-Trudeau dispute has been fierce on both sides.

USA, Canada and Mexico to host 2026 FIFA World Cup
The two rivals bids each got 15 minutes to make one last pitch Wednesday, with the North American bid going first. The 2018 tournament kicks off in Russian Federation on Thursday and the 2022 World Cup is to take place in Qatar.

Kudlow suggested that Trump might have been deploying extra bravado to demonstrate strength before his meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

At an event hosted by the Journal, Navarro said he had made a mistake, according to the newspaper.

On Saturday, the summit's second and final day, President Trump left early and took to Twitter to praise Canada, seemingly leaving the country on positive terms.

Given the confusion, we should not take for granted that traditional USA allies will continue to stand with us. As per a CNN report, on the conclusion of the G7 summit, Kudlow said that the United States had planned to sign the joint G7 communique until Trudeau made certain statements countering the economic interests of the United States.

It is unfortunate that there is now "so little trust" in this most important relationship, commented University of Montreal professor Frederic Merand. "I think all Canadians have unified behind the prime minister, from all political persuasions because they know an attack on him is an attack on all of Canada". Canada exports $300 billion worth of goods to the United States, while the USA exports $282.5 billion worth of goods to Canada.

The U.S. also made the job of protecting and promoting rule of law, democratic values and a shared vision of the future - in the face of a concerted challenge from the likes of China and Russian Federation - even more hard. "Obviously, we don't want to be held hostage to these tariffs Donald Trump has arbitrarily put in place, but there are other things that we would like to see in terms of advancing the free trade agenda". "It's a betrayal. He's double-crossing", he said Sunday.

Canada, she said, is still seeking a "win-win-win" NAFTA deal, while adding that Ottawa will remain "absolutely resolute in defense of the national interest".
