The Raptors Have Found Their Next Head Coach

Toronto has chose to promote Dwane Casey's old assistant, and will hire Nick Nurse as the team's ninth head coach in franchise history according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. According to Woj, the two sides are still working out the specific details of the contract. Wojnarowski reports that Nurse accepted the job on Tuesday morning.

Nurse came to Toronto fresh off of a NBA Development League championship with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and also won a league championship with Iowa, a D-League coach of the year award and worked extensively in Britain. External candidates included San Antonio Spurs assistants Ettore Messina and Ime Udoka, former Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer (who was hired by the Milwaukee Bucks on May 17) and EuroLeague coach Sarunas Jasikevicius.

Nurse, 50, has been coaching for 30 years, succeeding at every level along the way.

The Toronto Raptors had the best regular season in franchise history this year, but after LeBron dealt them yet another postseason beatdown, the franchise elected to fire coach Dwane Casey.

Nurse has been an assistant with Toronto since the 2013 season. He also won two rings at the minor-league level.

Casey was named head coach of the Detroit Pistons, replacing Stan Van Gundy, on Monday.

A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Nurse was 23 when he became head coach of Grand View College, making him the youngest college basketball coach in the U.S.
