Newborn survives after being buried alive

The family, who are members of the Kamayura tribe, reportedly told police the baby had hit her head on the floor after her 15-year-old mother gave birth on Tuesday.

A newborn girl has miraculously survived after being buried alive for seven hours, according to Brazilian police.

Salvation came for the baby following an anonymous tip received by the police about a death that has not been reported. Suddenly, they hear a little sound coming from underground, and when they pulled the baby out, she was still alive.

The indigenous girl was buried in the Xingu National Park in Mato Grosso state, and still had her umbilical cord attached.

She has taken been taken into care by the state.

She's said to be in stable condition.

The child was buried around 2pm but we were only called to investigate the incident late that night.

By the time we arrived we never expected to find the child alive.

The teen mum was also questioned by police and hospitalised.

They wanted to clarify if there were "anthropological issues" in the case linked to indigenous customs, do Prado said.

The baby's mother, a 15-year old, had gone into labour around midday while in the bathroom. However, a medical evaluation found the baby was full term.

Officers investigating the incident say they have arrested the grandmother with attempted murder, they have also said they are shocked at how the newborn survived for so long.
