Led joint bid wins right to host 2026 World Cup

Led joint bid wins right to host 2026 World Cup

The Associated Press reports that FIFA's member associations voted 134 to 65, with one no-vote, Wednesday in favour of the joint North American bid by Canada, the USA and Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup men's soccer tournament over that of Morocco.

Delegates at the Fifa Congress in Moscow voted for the joint bid on Wednesday on the eve of the first game of the 2018 edition.

Russian Federation is hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which is set to begin Thursday. "We are all united in football", US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said.

"On behalf of our United Bid, thank you so very much for this incredible honour. Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege". Instead of a small executive committee making the decision, this time it was done by a vote of FIFA's over 200 member nations. The intercontinental playoff will be held somewhere in the United States, Canada or Mexico, perhaps in November 2025. Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup, though it was the site of the 2015 Women's World Cup.

The "United Bid" calls for the U.S.to host 60 matches, including all games from the quarter-finals through to the final.

The final will be held at the 84,953-capacity MetLife Stadium, which is home to National Football League sides the New York Giants and the New York Jets.

Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City are up for consideration in Mexico, while Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton are the Canadian cities that have been proposed.

Now that the months of hard yards and near-permanent politicking are out of the way, the really difficult part begins for the North American team - preparing for the biggest World Cup in history.

Mexico has previously hosted two World Cups, in 1970 and 1986. Russia's head of World Cup security estimated last week that 105 representatives from 30 countries have confirmed involvement in the cooperation center, a number he expects to grow by opening day. The only other World Cup played in more than one country was in the 2002 event shared by South Korea and Japan.

For Morocco, it was the fifth time it had bid for the hosting rights to the football World Cup, calling it "the dream of a nation".

Just to add to the complexity, there was a third option for all voters: neither Morocco or United and we would have had to start a new bidding process.

With Russia hosting in 2018 and Qatar in 2022, no countries from either Europe or Asia were allowed to bid for the 2026 tournament.

Both bids made their final appeals to UEFA voters in Moscow on Tuesday, with Morocco and United expected to get a vast show of support from their respective confederations.

The Fifa meeting had 15 points on its agenda, and voting on the World Cup location was point 13. That would bring each of FIFA's 211 members $50 million.

She was cleared of any wrongdoing and dismissed the claims as "laughable" and "unfortunate". The north African nation would have to build numerous stadiums required for the event. This media house does not correct any spelling or grammatical error within press releases and commentaries.
