Huge data breach at United Kingdom tech retailer

British mobile phone and electricals retailer Dixons Carphone has become the victim of a major cyber attack for the second time in three years after discovering unauthorised access to its payment card data. "The protection of our data has to be at the heart of our business, and we've fallen short here", he added.

The latest incident also potentially exposed the personal details of 1.2 million people (name, address, email address), leaving customers more exposed to potential phishing attacks as a result.

However, it was quick to add that 5.8 million of these cards had chip and PIN protection, and that the data stolen did not include pin codes, card verification values (CVV) or authentication data - making it more hard for the hackers to monetize the breached data. It also confirms it has informed the UK's data watchdog the ICO, financial conduct regulator the FCA, and the police. But around 105,000 of them were issued outside the European Union and do not have the same protections.

They claim stolen data is not believed to have left internal systems, but are advising customers to take protective steps anyway.

Dixons Carphone said that action had been taken to close off the access, and there was no evidence to suggest it was continuing. "We have no evidence of any fraud on these cards as a result of this incident".

'We are determined to put this right and are taking steps to do so; we promptly launched an investigation, engaged leading cyber security experts, added extra security measures to our systems and will be communicating directly with those affected'.

"We are extremely disappointed for any upset this may cause".

It said there was now no evidence of any fraudulent use of the information - with the vast majority of the cards having chip and pin protection.

It comes after telecoms firm TalkTalk was hit by a major cyber attack in October 2015, which saw the personal data of almost 160,000 people accessed by hackers and left the firm facing a record £400,000 fine for security failings.
