Facing off with Trump, Justin Trudeau dons the cape of 'Captain Canada'

President Donald Trump reprised his criticism of Canada's prime minister Tuesday, threatening that Justin Trudeau's tough exchanges with him over trade policy would "cost a lot of money for the people of Canada".

"We finished the (G7) meeting and really everybody was happy". Addressing reporters in Singapore ahead of Trump's summit Tuesday with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Pompeo said he was "unconcerned" that Trump's treatment of Canada - a close ally - boded poorly for his ability to forge peace with a longtime US adversary. The Trudeau government has announced it will impose dollar-for-dollar, retaliatory tariffs on metals and a range of other USA products by July 1. And add to that the fact that the USA pays close to the entire cost of NATO-protecting many of these same countries that rip us off on Trade (they pay only a fraction of the cost-and laugh!).

He also insulted Trudeau personally, dubbing him "very dishonest and weak" and excoriated Canada's managed dairy market, which is a tiny part of total exchanges but is protected by a huge 270 percent tariff. According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with US (guess they were bragging and got caught!).

"Canada does not believe that ad hominem attacks are a particularly appropriate or useful way to conduct our relations with other countries", Freeland told reporters at a press conference Sunday. Mulroney and Trump are also known to have been friends.

But even conservative and populist figures on the right of Canadian politics, some of them admirers of Trump's brand of politics when it stays south of the border, rallied to their liberal premier.

In a string of angry tweets, Trump said the USA paid "close to the entire cost of Nato" to help protect countries that "rip us off on trade".

Sacramento's Korean community hopes for peace from US-North Korea summit
In April, Warmbier's parents filed a lawsuit against North Korea, alleging that the government tortured and murdered their son. North Korea blamed botulism and ingestion of a sleeping pill and dismissed torture claims.

Since Trump's election in 2016, Trudeau has tried to take a conciliatory approach to the populist Republican president and has been careful never to run him down in public. $800 Billion Trade Deficit...

Behind his claim lies a difference in how the countries' calculate the trade figures.

The G7 is made up of seven nations: Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Italy.

Yet he worked to smooth over the ideological differences and to present himself as the best neighbor the United States could hope for.

Trump's actions are being called ludicrous and absurd - but then again, coming from a man whose only experience before entering politics was as a businessman (with highly questionable dealings and tactics) and a reality TV show host, might not be all that surprising.

"According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with U.S. (guess they were bragging and got caught!). We're the closest partners in the world, and you don't want to see a dispute over one particular issue poison everything". "And Justin. And I said, "Oh that's nice, Justin's giving a" - And then he talked about how they won't be bullied".
