African Countries Vote Against Morocco's 2026 World Cup Bid

The United 2026 joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico has won the right to host the 2026 Fifa World Cup after Fifa's member associations met at the Fifa Congress in Moscow ahead of the kick-off of Russian Federation 2018.

The United States will host 60 out of 80 games, with the remaining 20 split evenly between Mexico and Canada.

The congress was presided over by Fifa's head Gianni Infantino while it was opened by Russian president Vladimir Putin, who received a standing ovation from attendees at Moscow's Expocentre.

Denver is among the cities included in the USA bid, but there's no word yet on which cities will hold the matches.

From the quarter-finals onwards all of the games will be hosted by the U.S. and the final is set to be played at the 82,500-capacity MetLife Stadium in NY. A decision is not expected for another two years. Matches in Mexico will be played in Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara; games in Canada will be played in Toronto, Montreal, and Edmonton, according to Pro Soccer Talk.

How many teams will participate?

There will be 48 nations represented at the tournament in eight years' time - 16 more than will take part in Russian Federation - in an attempt to increase global interest in the World Cup.

So what about the tournament setup? The United Bid featured a youth team player from each of the three nations, beginning with a moving tale by 17-year-old Canadian Alphonso Davies, the current Major League Soccer player of the week, about how his family had been welcomed after fleeing civil war in Africa. The top two will progress to the knockout stage, which will start with an additional round of 32.
