United Flight to Chicago Diverted After Security Concern

United Airlines flight UA971, en route to Chicago from Rome, was diverted to Shannon, Ireland following a "potential security concern", a statement from the airlines said.

"After assessing the situation our crew made the decision to divert to the nearest available airport", it said.

There were 214 passengers and crew on board.

The Boeing 767-300 jet was about 200 kilometres west of County Clare when the plane was redirected back.

Shannon airport implemented emergency procedures which involved alerting the local authority fire service, HSE National Ambulance Service and An Garda Síochána.

The flight landed safely at 1.42pm and was met by airport rescue vehicles.

They also confirmed that the plane and all the passengers are now being searched.

The message was found in the plane toilet, it said, without citing sources.

According to the Irish Times, gardai are taking handwriting samples from passengers to try and establish who is behind the note. It's expected that baggage in the cargo hold will also be checked.

The airline said on Twitter that the flight was now canceled and would depart for Chicago on Tuesday.
