Lopetegui replaces Zidane as Real Madrid coach

The short statement also added that the Basque will take up his role after the World Cup, which starts on Thursday and finishes on July 15, with Spain among the favourites to reach the final in Moscow.

Lopetegui and the Spain squad are now at their training base in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar.

Lopetegui has been head coach of Spain's national team for two years and this will be the 51-year-old's first major tournament.

He only signed an extension to his deal until 2020 last month.

The club released a statement this afternoon to that effect which said: "Julen Lopetegui will be the coach of Real Madrid after the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation".

However, following the departure of Zidane - who left the club after lifting his third successive Champions League trophy - according to the Independent, Bale is now reconsidering his options and will wait to see who Florentino Perez appoints this summer.

That's according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague who admits he was surprised by the news.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with the Bernabeu post but they have agreed a deal with Lopetegui.

He also played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, although he only played one league game for Madrid, and five for Barcelona.

With Spain, he has won 14 and drawn six since succeeding Vicente del Bosque in 2016.

Zidane resigned as manager following an unprecedented era of success that saw Real win three consecutive Champions League titles, most recently defeating Liverpool 3-1 in Ukraine to complete the treble.
