Economic adviser Larry Kudlow suffers heart attack, Trump says

President Donald Trump tweeted Monday night that National Economic Council director Larry Kudlow had suffered a heart attack and is at Walter Reed Medical Center. "He is now in Walter Reed Medical Center", Mr. Trump wrote.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow gives a press briefing about upcoming G7 in the White House in Washington, U.S., June 6, 2018.

Kudlow, though only on the job since March, has become a popular figure in the White House who is known for gregarious and seasoned manner in an administration frequently riven by rivalries and disputes.

The famously pinstripe-suited Kudlow succeeded Gary Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive who left the post in a dispute over Trump's decision to impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. As recently as Sunday, he had appeared on TV defending the president's attacks on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, saying that Trudeau had committed a "betrayal".

He has acknowledged ups and downs in his life, having been addicted to drugs and alcohol before getting sober more than 20 years ago.

Kudlow had worked as a White House budget aide in the Reagan administration, and had also been an informal advisor to the 2016 Trump campaign.

Larry Kudlow was taken to a Washington-area hospital, Mr. Trump announced on Twitter.
