Armed man 'with a bomb' holds three inside a shop

Shocking photos show police decked out in body armour with a local reporter warning of "an armed man".

The man was described as "determined and violent" by police, who surrounded the building where three hostages were being held on Tuesday.

The Paris Police Prefecture confirmed to CNN that there was "a police intervention" underway at Rue des Petites Ecuries in the 10th arrondissement of the French capital. Special units and fire services were at the scene.

One hostage has a head injury, Yves Lefebvre, a police union spokesman, said.

A journalist for BFM Paris said two hostages had been taken.

The hostages are being held in the internal courtyard of the building, which contains a mix of offices and residential apartments.

There were no immediate details on the age, appearance or nationality of the hostage taker.
