Patrick Vieira plans to scupper Gunners summer deal


Domènec Torrent, who has been Pep Guardiola's assistant coach since 2007 at Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, will be the new coach of New York City FC, the club announced on Monday.

Vieira has left his role as head coach role of New York City FC to replace Lucien Favre at the Allianz Riviera.

The 41-year-old has been in charge of New York City since 2016, having led the Manchester City reserves following his retirement from playing.

He leaves NY second in the MLS Eastern Conference after Friday's draw with Atlanta.

There was a point where he was touted to be in the frame for the Arsenal job, but today Patrick Vieira has made his first foray into the world of European club management at OGC Nice. He was also briefly linked to the Arsenal position following Arsene Wenger's departure.

"Nice were looking for a coach with the ability to continue to produce attractive football, to bring through youngsters by taking risks to help them grow, and someone who lives and breathes to win", President Jean-Pierre Rivere said on the club's website https://www.ogcnice.com.

"We know that leaving the club has been a hard decision for him, but we understand his choice to return to Europe where he spent his whole playing career", team vice chairman Marty Edelman said.

"I am fulfilled, happy", said Vieira. His contract runs until the end of the 2020 season. "I have watched numerous matches and I enjoy the way the team plays and I now can't wait to begin working with the players on the training pitch".

Torrent was a head coach at Girona in the Spanish third division in 2005-06.

While NYCFC don't play until June 24 against Toronto FC, the move has been brewing for multiple weeks, with Vieira's exit becoming increasingly more likely.

"Domenec is someone we know really well and have great confidence in as both a person and as a coach".
