Survivors courageous rain, cancer, for annual Relay for Life

Helen Hartmann has been attending the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Chickasaw County since the 1980s, which basically means she's been there from the beginning; after all Relay for Life started in 1986.

Beginning this afternoon at 4pm until 11pm, Local cancer survivors and their caregivers will take the celebratory first lap at the following American Cancer Society Relay For Life. "Prince George can be so proud of what we do for Relay For Life, we walk for 24 hours because someone fights cancer for 24 hours a day", says Cassie.

"I had my annual physical scheduled for April, and when my husband insisted, I moved it up and went in", Hart said.

That journey, thanks to Cooper's family, and American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, is one she no longer has to walk alone.

Unfortunately, we're sure almost every person reading this has been affected in some way by cancer's sinister touch; participating in Relay is one way to fight back and help find a cure.

On top of supporting a worthy cause, there's another reason participants come back year after year for the Relay For Life.

Power leads in Memphis, Appleby one back
World number two Dustin Johnson is just a shot further adrift after a round of 67, which included a chip-in birdie. Just need to continue to do what I do and obviously a three-peat would be fantastic. "We were all over the place".

Relay For Life also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost to cancer, Lockett said.

When the survivors and their caregivers made a second lap together, the teams roared even louder as the walkers laughed and even danced in the street.

Luminarias decorated with messages honoring people affected by cancer line the Rock Chalk Park track as part of the Douglas County Relay for Life on Friday, June 8, 2018. Last year, she raised over $5,000. Teams also will have fundraisers at their campsites.

"I was invited to a team meeting, and right away, I knew this was something I had to be involved in", she said. "When a cancer patient says they're exhausted, it's a exhausted that a non-patient doesn't understand". "Today we will hear awesome stories of strength, courage and hope, and this entire relay runs on hope".

Another large fundraiser will be a Dad's Day 5K on Sunday, June 17 at Strouss Park in Mendota hosted by Relay For Life team "Breast Friends". After 18 years of being involved, Silipigni has found that it isn't the money that matters the most, but the people. You can have the best family and friends in the world but they don't really get it.

"Putting together an event like this is not easy; it takes about a year of planning", said McMurter. "They donated a $10,000 kitchen for us to raffle", Jackson said. "We fight to end cancer, to celebrate hope and more birthdays".
