Formula One: Hamilton blow as Mercedes postpone new engine in Canada

That was in the wake of Red Bull's pace at the Monaco Grand Prix with Daniel Ricciardo having joined Hamilton and Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel in the title race.

Reliability concerns have forced Mercedes to delay using a new engine that had been planned for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix.

The Mercedes engines are the most powerful on the grid with Ferrari coming a close second after making a significant step forward from last season.

"We can see that we are in a stronger position in both championships than we were 12 months ago", the Mercedes chief added.

Montreal is the seventh of 21 rounds this season and the circuit's long straights and its power-sensitive nature means it is often a target for engine upgrades. "But we're going to give it everything we've got, that's for sure".

The 33-year-old Briton, who loves spending time in North America where he has additionally won the United States Grand Prix four times, arrived in Montreal on Tuesday night after visiting California, reportedly to check on his dogs Roscoe and Coco, and NY.

The double World Champion can count himself among the Canadian Grand Prix winners, however, it has been four years since last he even scored a point in Montreal.

The Silver Arrows now lead both the drivers and constructors championships after six races.

"I've always enjoyed racing in Montreal". It has the best combination of a great track, challenging street circuit characteristics, and it's a fun city to visit.

"Each driver has their strengths and weaknesses and there are 21 circuits it is impossible to be ideal at every one".

"There are certain circuits that will suit you more than another place and this has been one of those circuits for me".
