More than a decade of steadily rising rates have made suicide the nation's 10th leading cause of death and one of only three causes of death - including Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses - that are increasing in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And that figure was alarming. Out of the 10 leading causes of death suicide is the only leading cause that has not seen a decrease in the numbers.

They've gone up in every state except Nevada.

Private charities, which help sustain suicide prevention hotlines, also have a harder time raising funds than those that tackle some other health issues, experts said. It cruises beneath the surface, quietly destroying lives and inflicting pain on families.

For both sexes in North Carolina, about one-third left a suicide note and nearly one-quarter disclosed suicidal intentions to someone else.

There's also no single cause for suicide.

How do you know when to have the talk?

Signs and symptoms to look for include isolation, agitation, anger, alcohol or drug use and changes in sleep patterns. Barbara Lowe, a licensed psychologist in Durham who works with a lot of suicide cases, said the best thing you can do is directly ask someone if they are considering suicide. If you're hurting, reach out.
